The provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 place duties on people and companies who own, operate or have control over work equipment. PUWER also places responsibilities on businesses and organisations whose employees use work equipment, whether owned by them or not.

Engineering Inspection under PUWER...
A technical inspection to identify whether the work equipment is serviceable and safe to operate. The aim of the inspection is to identify any defects or deterioration that could lead to injury or equipment failure.
What equipment needs inspecting?
The list of equipment PUWER applies to is extremely broad. It includes any equipment new or old, hired or owned. Any equipment that could potentially cause harm to a person’s health and safety. It is safe to assume that all machinery and equipment should be inspected see below for a list of examples of equiment that requires a PUWER inspection.
Who is responsible for PUWER inspections?
If you are an employer or self-employed person providing lifting equipment for use at work, or you have control of the use of lifting equipment, then the Regulations will apply to you.
